If you are uncertain about learning to fly, or if you just want to get airborne to “feel what it is like” before you commence training, then why not take a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). You will be given the chance to take the controls once airborne to see how the aircraft works, with the Instructor giving you a pre-flight briefing and letting you observe an aircraft pre-flight inspection.
Aviation Medical
An aviation medical by an Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approved Doctor is required prior to the commencement of training.
There are two classes of medicals:
- Class 2 Medical - is recommended for students who are learning to fly purely for their own enjoyment and recreation, and do not intend to train beyond their Private Pilot’s Licence.
- Class 1 Medical - is for students who intend to obtain a Commercial Pilot’s Licence and pursue a career in aviation.
Your nearest CASA approved Doctor can be located by phoning 131 757 (within Australia) or by visiting CASA website.
Overseas students, please note that there are CASA approved Doctors in most countries, and the appropriate medical examination can therefore be completed before your arrival to Australia. This is recommended just in case students fail their medical after their arrival in Australia.
Prior to obtaining an aviation medical, students will need to organize a CASA Aviation Reference Number (ARN). The ARN application form can be downloaded from the CASA website.
Aviation Security Clearance
The Australian Government now requires all pilots and trainee pilot to undergo background checking. Before students can be issued with a Student Pilot Licence (SPL) they must provide CASA with proof of identification as part of the security clearance process. For more information please visit the CASA website.
The appropriate form can be downloaded from the CASA website.
Please note that you are restricted from flying solo until you have the CASA SPL (which can take up to 8 weeks to receive).
